Southall dog owner banned from keeping animals for five years

Sad sight: the emaciated body of Cuba A SOUTHALL man was banned from keeping all animals for five years after his two emaciated dogs died. Sanjeev Gill, 44, of Lancaster Road, was sentenced at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court last week (26) following an RSPCA investigation. Insp Mike Beaman was called by colleagues at an RSPCA Animal Hospital in November 2019 after Gill arrived with two dead dogs, a two-year-old male Akita called Cuba and a four-year-old male German Shepherd, Max, who appeared to be emaciated. He claimed one of the dogs had gone missing the day before and he then discovered the pair dead in a communal area near his homea, so he took them to the RSPCA clinic where they were registered.

Hundreds of cockerels being dumped by owners

Hundreds of cockerels have been abandoned by people who tried to raise hens amid fears of an egg shortage during the first coronavirus lockdown. The novice owners bought fertilised eggs and then hatched them themselves in the hope of having hens which could lay edible eggs.  But when in many cases male birds were born instead, owners decided their noisy crowing was too much for them and their neighbours to bear. That, coupled with new bird flu regulations imposed in December, meant that the RSPCA was forced to deal more than 1,500 cockerels and hens in 2021.  Other unscrupulous owners have taken to dumping them in the countryside.

More than 1,500 hens and cockerels bought during lockdown have been dumped and abandoned

Cockerels and hens that were bought during the lockdown are being dumped in large numbers as owners try to tackle a return of bird flu. The RSPCA has dealt with 1,562 abandoned birds in the UK this year as new owners struggle to comply with the Government s new biosecurity advice following the outbreak of the H5N8 strain - which has not infected any humans to date. The charity has also taken 280 chickens into its centres for rehoming and has warned that rescue centres could soon become overrun with the abandoned birds as more people get rid of their pets.      It comes after hen producers reported a surge in demand for chicks this spring following a shortage of eggs in supermarkets.
