Democratic lawmakers, legal organizations condemn bill to remove Nashville judge over absentee vote ruling Mariah Timms, Nashville Tennessean © Jae S. Lee / The Tennessean Davidson County Chancellor Ellen Hobbs Lyle presides Friday during trial on the first day of Nashville’s new business court. Leading legal organizations in Tennessee and Democratic lawmakers came to the defense Tuesday of an embattled Nashville judge targeted by Republicans over her decision in a voting rights case.  The legal groups and lawmakers are standing behind Davidson County Chancellor Ellen Hobbs Lyle, who came under fire from the state legislature last week when a Republican state lawmaker filed a resolution pushing to remove her from the bench over her 2020 ruling to expand absentee voting during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bar associations criticize Lyle resolution

House GOP is pushing removal of Nashville chancellor Both the Tennessee Bar Association and Nashville Bar Association on Tuesday issued statements forcefully opposing a push by Tennessee House Republicans to remove Davidson County Chancellor Ellen Hobbs Lyle because of her election-related rulings last year. “Judges must be able to decide controversial cases based on the facts and the law, not based on how their decision may be perceived by the legislature,” NBA President Mike Abelow said in a statement. “No judge in the history of our state has been removed because the legislature disagreed with the judge’s decision. Violating that precedent threatens the people’s rights under our constitution. The Nashville Bar Association is working with other organizations to urge our legislature to oppose this resolution.
