The legacy of James Almeida, one of Taunton s last silver chasers

TAUNTON  Last October, Taunton lost one of its last Reed and Barton silver chasers: James E. Almeida.  Though he is gone, he has left behind a legacy of ornate, handcrafted tableware, as well as his multitude of tools, which give a unique and personal look into Taunton s past and a dying art form. His artistry will soon be on display for all to see at the Old Colony History Museum, thanks to posthumous donations of his work by his family.  Almeida was born in 1927 to his father, Antone Almeida, who was also a chaser at Reed and Barton and taught him the trade, according to his niece-in-law, Mija Almeida.
