ATHENS After 26 years of residence in Greece, President of the Pakistani community in Greece Javed Aslam was granted refugee status by the Migration Ministry s Asylum Committee on Tuesday.
Aslam was arrested for the first time by Greek authorities in 2006 on an Interpol warrant requested by the Pakistani government, on charges of illegal migration and human trafficking.
Courts in Greece at the time rejected Pakistan s extradition request, on the grounds of insufficient evidence against Aslam.
In May 2012 he was arrested anew on a fresh extradition request for the same case, but he applied for political asylum and was approved.
