And it s not because everything in Texas is bigger. Before Texas was Texas, the Lone Star State was once a part of Mexico. In 1820, U.S. settler Moses Austin arranged permission with the Spanish government to settle in the sparsely populated areas of Texas, according to the Texas State Historical Association. While the land was approved, Austin died before he could make arrangements. His son, Stephen F. Austin (the founder of the state s capital), eventually took over the contract.
