Chief Nursing Officer in the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Kerthney Charlemagne – Surage in an address to mark the day, spoke about nurses’ contribution to the health sector in Saint Lucia, and the challenges they face, particularly since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Here is Nurse Surage,s full address delivered last Monday: St. Lucia joins the rest of the Region in celebrating International Nurses Day on May 12, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. International Midwifery Day is celebrated on May 5 th. However, because all the Midwives in St. Lucia are nurses, we collectively celebrate May 12th and this year, we have decided to have a month long celebration in May to celebrate Nurses in St. Lucia.

May 13, 2021 Izah Azahari The COVID-19 pandemic showed the whole world the important role nurses play in maintaining public health during the response phase of the COVID-19 outbreak, said Head of Nursing Administration at Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital Hajah Kartini binti Haji Suhai at the International Nurses and Midwives Day celebration yesterday. “In the past 15 months, nurses have been in the frontline of dealing with the pandemic, silently working through long hours to care for patients and the well-being of the public,” she said as the chairwoman of the event held at foyer of Lobby 5, RIPAS Hospital. This year’s celebration is themed ‘Nurses: A Voice to Lead’.
