hi, julie, the snow is just really coming down out here. it s already piling up. we ve seen between three to six inches in the metro detroit area and other you re dealing with the wind. it s blowing the snow into the roads. as you can see, there s snow piling up, and the plows have been through here, but again, the wind is just blowing so much of it into the roads that it s hard for them to stay on top of. now, we ve not received many reports of accidents, but there have been a number of spin-outs, people going way too fast for the weather conditions and sadly we expect things will get worse before it s better. how are they xkting the cleanup to go by the way? you know, they re working to try to clean everything up. but what we re concerned about is that as the evening progresses it will get a lot colder, overnight. expecting temperatures in the teens and wind chill of 10 degrees below zero, so, again, all of this, that you see in the roads, it will turn into ice and make it a lot
but i knew that i was going to need a day job. we actually have a lot of scientists that play music. the creativity, the innovation, there s definitely a tie there. one thing our scientists are working on is carbon capture and storage, which could prevent co2 from entering the atmosphere. we ve just built a new plant to demonstrate how we can safely freeze out the co2 from natural gas. it looks like snow. it s one way that we re helping provide energy with fewer emissions. a delta airline flight forced to return to jfk airport after passengers notice what were told was a smoky odor. delta flight pound for tel aviv, according to a
chicago, due not the snow, but the high winds. and several counties across the midwest and take a look at the video in minnesota and the roof of the metro dome in minneapolis, caving in this morning under the pressure of 17 inches of snow. a vikings game against the giants scheduled there for today pushed to monday and the storm kept the giants, the team getting to minnesota in the first place, now, they ll play tomorrow night in detroit. the midwest though isn t the only area dealing with extreme weather, record rain fall is triggering mudslides and threatening rivers are threatening to flood small towns in washington and in areas of portland. it could be the wettest storm they ve had in that part of the country in two years. severe cold already gripping several states, the arctic air with temperatures dropping below zero in the dakotas and parts of iowa, wisconsin and minnesota. and now, let s get back to
travelers that have been stranded, rebooking flights. one thing, the blizzard cannot diminish, the spirit of the people, who called the midwest home. oh, a lot of snow, but i ve got confidence, we know how to handle snow. coming up we go live to detroit to see the conditions firsthand. so, what is next for this storm. let s get right to the meteorologist maria molina, she joins us live in the weather center. hi, julie, that s right. a lot of snowfall there and falling this time a little further east, chicago already beginning to clear things out, but the other big story with the storm is the windy conditions, we re seeing gusts of up to 50 miles per hour, right behind the storm, so, areas like chicago, even though most of the snow has stopped falling and we still have a lot of blowing and drifting because of the wind and that wind is also going to make things feel pretty cold out. and seeing that snow from basically parts of michigan and as far south as northern
that state. people there still recovering from that major blizzard we just mentioned, it was one of the five largest to hit the twin cities ever. here is what we ve already seen. seen. look at these incredible pictures. the inflatable roof of the metro dome in minneapolis caving in under the weight of 17 inches of snow. the storm closing roads throughout minnesota, white-out conditions made it impossible for drivers to get anywhere, but that didn t didn t stop people from trying. reports of more than 75 state wide and more than 3,000 vehicles sliding off the roads or stuck in snow drifts. we ve been down three or four times today dragging people out. and people now trying to dig out. either the old-fashioned way with shovels or by putting snow blowers to use, the storm also grounding hundreds of flights saturday, but today, under clear skies, the minneapolis, st. paul international airport got back to business.
