Aspergillus flavus and at high levels it can cause illness and death in pets. The toxin can be present even if there is no visible mold.
The FDA recently noted another round of cat and dog food recalls, this one spurred by the presence of aflatoxin at potentially deadly levels. This isn’t the first pet food recall this year caused by this toxin, but it is the most deadly, with more than two dozen dog deaths linked to the recalled pet food. LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A pet food recall every owner needs to know about as it’s caused at least 70 deaths and 80 illnesses in dogs that ingested the recalled food. It centers around certain packages of Sportmix pet food, which is available at online retailers and some local locations across eastern Nebraska.
If you have this product in your home, you are asked to safely dispose of it immediately in a way that any animal or human cannot consume it, and thoroughly wash any container it has come in contact with during its time in your home and thoroughly wash your hands after any contact with the product.
