Rockford restaurants: Ernie s Midtown Pub to open in September

ROCKFORD    A neighborhood bar and grill with a nostalgic Rockford ambience is slated to open in the city’s Midtown District on Sep. 1.  Ernie’s Midtown Pub, 1025 Fifth Ave., will occupy the former site of Gene’s Irish Pub, which closed in February. “We’re going to have Chicago-style food with a bit of a twist,” said Ernie’s Midtown Pub owner Andrew Vowles. “Italian beef, Maxwell Street polish sausage, Chicago-style (hot) dogs, a pastrami Reuben sandwich with a turkey-style option, jalapeno poppers, grilled cheese and then a couple of signature items that I don’t want to put out there yet until we open.”
