Work on the $63.5 million patient tower at MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena continued on Monday. The project is on track and on budget for an opening in 2022.
ALPENA MidMichigan Health is expanding its footprint in northern Michigan, which hospital officials believe will offer patients better access to health care, better quality of care, and help lower the cost of that care.
MidMichigan Health announced on Friday the Hospital Board of Trustees of War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie agreed to enter into a nonbinding letter of intent with the health system.
Meanwhile, MidMichigan is 10 months into the construction of a new patient tower at its Alpena location and is planning for a new cancer center to be constructed at its Midland location.

ALPENA An Alpena doctor has received national attention for his willingness to drive the COVID-19 vaccine nearly 150 miles from Midland to Alpena, highlighting the struggles of rural health care.
Richard Bates, a former OB-GYN and regional vice president of medical affairs at MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena, has for weeks regularly traveled about 300 miles roundtrip in his pickup truck to bring the COVID-19 vaccine to Alpena from Midland.

MidMichigan Health has been keeping busy these past two weeks with distributing the COVID-19 vaccine as quickly as possible.
Dr. Lydia Watson, M.D., chief medical officer and senior vice president of MidMichigan Health commented how administrating the vaccine has been very rewarding.
“To have this vaccine given to our frontline staff, there has been every emotion shown. The clinics are going well,” Watson said.
In addition to the initial allotment of 2,925 doses of the Pfizer vaccine, MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland received 1,950 doses last week and is expecting another shipment of 1,950 doses by Wednesday.
