The Brownswood woman who broke down barriers and created the most enduring of legacies

Eileen Gray portrait from 1926 Born Kathleen Eileen Moray Smith on August 9, 1878, the Brownswood native would not only defy convention, not only overcome those obstacles, she would become a world leader in her field, an iconic figure who continues to be celebrated decades after her death. Eileen s father, James McLaren Smith (1832-1900), was a painter, her mother, Eveleen (1841-1918) an Anglo-Irish aristocrat whose lineage could be traced back to King James V. Clearly these were not your average Enniscorthy family. While the young Eileen undoubtedly had a better start to life than most, a most affluent upbringing, she displayed the single-mindedness which would serve her well in later life from a young age.

Why is there only one Irish cheese with protected status?

Opinion: the protected designation of origin scheme could be of huge commercial benefit to Irish cheese makers Would it surprise you to learn that Ireland has only one protected designation of origin (PDO) cheese? By comparison with Ireland s only PDO cheese (the Imokilly Regato), Greece has 23 PDO cheeses.  First of all, what s a PDO and why is it so important? PDO refers to a number of European Union schemes which promote and protect names of quality agricultural products and foodstuffs. Aside from the PDO scheme, there s also schemes for protected geographical indication and traditional specialities guaranteed. All of these schemes aim to protect the reputation of the regional foods, promote rural and agricultural activity, help producers obtain a premium price for their authentic products and eliminate unfair competition and misleading of consumers by non-genuine products, which may be of inferior quality or of different flavour.

Photo: Getty Images I first visited Sissinghurst on one of those spring mornings when the sky over England is filled with scudding clouds and the women wear optimistically light dresses that provide little protection from the sharp breeze. It was days after I had finished a tour of Wadi Rum, and the contrast between the pulsating heat of the Jordanian desert and this damp, exuberant greenery felt delightful. Sissinghurst embodies everything we want an English garden to be. A mixture of wild, overgrown abandon and meticulous planning, it is lovely to look at but also wonderfully evocative of a past era. Its walled white garden, which bursts into bloom each spring with nearly every white flower native to Britain, attracts visitors from around the globe, drawn to its powerful scent as much as to its prettiness.
