We dig deep as a group and we believe in our ability and first and foremost, we believe in what we are getting told to do. This team is special, we did it in the euros and we are here again tonight and we keep pushing forward. We stuck together as a team. Of course it was a very hard game. We made it through the extra time and we won the penalties and how we did that as a team, the team just kept going and i am so proud of them. The winner couldnt be found in 120 minutes, so it went to penalties, with Chloe Kelly Smashing Home the winner to send england through to the last eight. So, a dramatic win for england, who move into the quarterfinals to play colombia orjamaica on saturday. Our Reporterjane Dougall is there. Jane, this was far from comfortable and england will feel fairly fortunate to still be at the tournament. England is also very lucky to be here. Nigeria were the better team throughout the match and they had a couple of chances to have managed to win it and put england out. They wouldnt have been the first big team to have gone out because we have seen in america, the holders, go out. We have seen germany and brazil go out in the group stages. England will be feeling very fortunate indeed that they havent followed suit. There have been a couple of major Talking Points in this match, first of all the shout for the penalty where it looked as though rachel daly was pushed in the box. Many of the fans
Around, but generally speaking, not around, but generally speaking, not a bad day for many. Still quite warm, very warm across parts of yorkshire, mid 20s, 26 in norwich. Belfast and glasgow, the low 20s. Aberdeen. Not a bad day on the thermometer, the ideal conditions for many. But this evening and overnight, this is the low pressure swelling around just to the west, north west of ireland. And notice the showers piling into Western Scotland and some of these Western Areas at eight oclock in the morning on saturday. Towards the east from newcastle, norwich, sunshine greets you in the morning and temperatures will be around 16 degrees. Here comes the breeze with the low pressure pushing in the showers. Again, not persistent rain, but we could catch one or two after the other. But lengthy spells of sunshine and decent enough along the south coast of england. But almost anywhere, i think sunny spells and showers. Sunday, the low pressure is still with us. The breeze will ease a little bit
Earlier, i spoke to dr matt patterson, whos a Postdoctoral Research assistant in Atmospheric Physics at the University Of Oxford and has been following the winter heatwave. He said this is not a common occurance. Its really quite unusual to see a heatwave of this magnitude in the winter. As you said, weve seen temperatures of 38 degrees in some andes towns when we would expect to see temperatures of 10 15 degrees at this time of year. So really quite unprecedented. In terms of the magnitude, 20 degrees more than average, thats comparable with Summer Heatwaves that weve seen in the southern United States, Southern Europe and china this year. Can you explain in basic terms what exactly is causing this heatwave in winter . Certainly. Its a High Pressure system just to the east of the andes, which is basically dragging warm air down from the tropics and bringing that heat down towards chile and argentina. That High Pressure is also compressing the air, much like when you pump up a bike tyr
