LOGAN â Several family members and friends of Teddy Nelson gathered on Midelburg Island near Logan High School Sunday afternoon to celebrate his life, one year after his untimely death from complications of the coronavirus.
Nelson was 25 years old when he died on April 11, 2020. He was Logan Countyâs first virus casualty and only the sixth or seventh statewide at the time, depending on conflicting reports.
Nelson battled the coronavirus for nearly two weeks, spending his final days in isolation on a ventilator at Logan Regional Medical Center. He made his last post on Facebook on March 28, 2020, in which he asked for prayers and said, âI just want to feel better.â
One doesnât have to be in downtown Logan to understand that the past is something that should not only be understood, but also appreciated for what transpired decades ago that could have changed all of what we identify with today. Sound confusing? Allow me to simplify the statement in an example.
What if I told you that all of Logan Senior High Schoolâs Midelburg Island history â including former legendary basketball coach Willie Akersâ four AAA state championships and his 427 coaching victories over a splendid 20-year career â never happened? No fieldhouse overflowing with thousands of cheering fans? No football field? No baseball or softball fields? Indeed, no high school, middle school or elementary school? What if ⦠?
