MIDDLETON â With the state in the grips of a COVID-19 surge, the Essex County Sheriffâs Department announced that as of Wednesday, it had 69 active cases among inmates at the Middleton Jail and House of Correction.Â
The majority of those testing positive are asymptomatic and the rest are demonstrating mild symptoms. There have been no hospitalizations. Testing for COVID-19 continues at the facility.Â
âTesting is the only way to effectively locate and prevent the spread of COVID-19 in congregate settings like ours. Itâs why we continue to test aggressively and why we have been able to provide the necessary health services our population needs within our own facilities,â Sheriff Kevin Coppinger said. âSimply put, you canât control the virus if you donât know where it is. Our testing reveals where itâs popping up unit by unit and that gives us an upperhand in the battle against COVID-19.â

SALEM â Area hospitals, nursing homes and the Middleton Jail are among the facilities where people will first receive the new COVID-19 vaccine, and administrators are scrambling to implement plans to give shots to dozens of caregivers, patients and prisoners.Â
Addison Gilbert and Beverly hospitals are gearing up, said Dr. Richard Nesto, chief medical officer and incident commander for Beth Israel Lahey Health, which operates Beverly, Addison Gilbert in Gloucester and Lahey hospitals.Â
The hospitals are preparing to receive shipments of the vaccine in the next day or two and will also begin giving the shots on Wednesday.Â
