A fascinating illustrated novel now tracks the story surrounding the ducking and the wider village history. Local writer Sylvia Chumbley has now read about the treatment John Cennick and his friends received in an account of his travels in North Wiltshire, called The Labours of John Cennick, 1739-1755 . The book, ‘John Cennick the forgotten evangelist’ by G.M. Best also provided her with source material. There were once a number of ponds in the village, but the one remaining one was likely to be where Cennick was thrown in, as it is so near to Middle Common where he began to preach.
