A massive fire, which erupted early Saturday in a vacant building in New York City’s East Village, spread to and destroyed one of the city’s oldest churches that is home to New York’s Liberty Bell, among other structures, including a women’s shelter.
Mayor Eric Adams said Sunday that religion and government should not "interfere" with one another, but pointedly declined to say that they should be "separate."
(RNS) New York City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission, by a vote of 8-2 on Jan. 10, granted the church’s request for a ‘certificate of appropriateness’ to take down the façade.
