(AP) The family of a 5-year-old boy who drowned during a kayaking excursion has settled a lawsuit for $7.2 million against the Hawaiʻi private school that operated the spring break program. Parents of Alaric Chiu sued Mid-Pacific Institute after the boy’s 2019 death. Lawyers for the family say it’s the largest publicly disclosed settlement in Hawaiʻi for the death of a child. The lawsuit says kayaking wasn’t listed in the program’s itinerary and was meant to be a surprise for the students. The lawsuit says Alaric didn’t know how to swim and the kayak didn’t have life vests. Mid-Pacific says the school has addressed safety and security issues.
