Omicron cases in India: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced "precautionary doses", or booster dose of Covid-19 vaccine, for healthcare and frontline workers and people above 60 years of age with co-morbidities from January 10. PM Modi also announced vaccination for 15-18 year age group against Covid-19 from January 3. PM Modi's address came in the wake of the rising cases of Omicron variant in India. On Sunday morning, the Omicron case tally in India rose to 422, with Maharashtra recording 108 cases of the new variant.

The predominant strain in India is Delta including the recently identified clusters. Therefore, we need to continue with the same strategy of COVID appropriate behaviour and ramping up of vaccination, said Dr. Balram Bhargava, DG-ICMR.
