Top Republican signals support for banning open carry in Michigan Capitol, but many say that’s not enough

The violent storming of the U.S. Capitol this week has renewed debate over the Michigan Capitol building’s security policies, and the state’s top Senate Republican is now expressing support for an open-carry ban in the building.
But those advocating for banning firearms in the building where state lawmakers do business say anything less than a complete ban isn’t enough to protect elected officials, staff and other visitors to the Michigan Capitol.
Unlike many state Capitol buildings around the country, visitors to the Michigan Capitol aren’t subject to metal detectors or a security checkpoint upon entry and are allowed to bring firearms into the building.

The violent mob that tried to take over the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 resulted in a historical American event, leaving legal and political experts to debate what exactly to call it.
Some people were there to protest the transition of power from Donald Trump to Joe Biden. Others were there to commit criminal acts, like vandalism and domestic terrorism, according to Michigan law experts and politicians.
There is an ongoing debate among experts over whether the riot that broke out at the Capitol is a coup or whether the people who participated in breaching the building are considered terrorists, said Josh Pasek, an associate professor of communication and a faculty associate at the Center for Political Studies at the University of Michigan.

⢠Angela-Jo L. Correa-Pei, who is currently employed as a strategy consultant at Kamehameha Schools. Correa-Pei is a graduate of UH’s William S. Richardson School of Law and was admitted to the Hawaii State Bar in 2000.
