Michigan State Police arrested Alexander Zuchnik, 39, as part of a major investigation into catalytic converter thefts plaguing this region of Michigan.
Zuchnik, of Three Rivers, was taken into custody in late April in Fort Wayne, Ind., on a warrant charging him with three counts of larceny from a motor vehicle in Branch County in November and December 2020. His arraignment was held Monday in Coldwater.
Each charge is a five-year felony, but with Zuchnik’s record of conviction in St. Joseph County, he could face up to life in prison as a fourth habitual offender. His most recent conviction, in 2019, was for possession of drugs.

Michigan State Police have arrested Alexander Zuchnik, 39, as part of a major investigation into catalytic converter thefts.
Zuchnik, of Three Rivers, was taken into custody in April in Fort Wayne, Ind., on a warrant charging him with three counts of larceny from a motor vehicle in Branch County in November and December 2020. His arraignment was held Monday in Coldwater.
The arrest is the first in what is expected to be several criminal and civil charges by prosecutors and state agencies. It began Dec. 21 when St. Joseph County deputy Jared Diekman opened a theft case, leading to Zuchnik and girlfriend Amber Marie Carpenter.
