I’ve been busy between work and home life, but still have had a chance to get out and bird this winter as well as glean what’s happening in the area from personal conversations, Facebook, eBird, emails and more. Birding is both a personal interest of mine, and a service I provide on behalf of Michigan Sea Grant, and as an Extension educator with Michigan State University. Effective partnership-building and communication skills are key for scientific research to benefit society January 12, 2021 Students attending a professional development workshop gained skills to further their work on complex water quality issues. Participants in a Community-Engaged Scholarship Workshop have a discussion with a panel of science communicators. Resources presented during the workshop were designed to show a range of tools, networks, and techniques that would assist students in sharing their work and/or engaging their community partners. Water quality is a critical issue Michigan Sea Grant, MSU Extension, and many partners invest in, especially as it relates to nutrient runoff, environmental systems, and impacts on drinking water, human health, and coastal ecosystems. Framing and focusing scientific questions, as well as successfully incorporating research results into Extension programs or informing policy and decision-making, often depends on effective partnership

Discovery Pier earns certification

File photo special to the Record-Eagle COMMERCE TOWNSHIP — Discovery Pier in Traverse City is one of eight facilities to earn Michigan Clean Marina Program certification. The program is administered by the Michigan Boating Industries Association. According to a release, the MBIA is a non-profit trade association representing more than 350 marine-related businesses. The Clean Marina Program is designed to “preserve and protect” the Great Lakes through voluntary efforts. “The certification process begins with a pledge to participate in the program, followed by a course with an overview of the designation process and a review of best management practices,” the MBIA release said. “After implementing improvements and reaching a level of competencies, a CMP Certification Specialist evaluates the facility’s environmental stewardship.”
