Annual Polar Plunge in support of Special Olympics Michigan goes virtual this year

“Everyone just gets to be a little bit more creative in how they take the plunge this year,” Blakeslee said.

The virtual event is designed to raise awareness for Special Olympics Michigan. The funds are intended to support athletes as well as tournaments, health and wellness initiatives, anti-bullying efforts and education.

So, what exactly is a âvirtualâ Polar Plunge? Instead of hitting the water in an icy pool or open body of water at a traditional Plunge location as in previous years, participants now choose where, when and how to get chilled for the athletes of Special Olympics Michigan. The event coordinators say you can do snow angels in your swimsuit, lounge in a cold water-filled kiddie pool in your backyard or have a family member spray you with a water hose or splash you with a bucket of cold water. Back in December, we gave our viewers a challenge. The terms were – if they got our Facebook page to 6000 ‘page likes’, then Xavier Hershovitz and Melissa Smith would participate in this year’s Michigan Law Enforcement Polar Plunge. Fortunately, for our viewers, and not so much for Melissa and Xavier, we hit our mark on social media, and as promised they jumped into a trough of cold water right outside the Heritage House Kitchen on January 22.
“I didn’t think we could get 6000 ‘likes’, so I thought we were off the hook,” said Melissa. “Once I found out that our viewers made it happen, I couldn’t believe it. But, I am glad that we had an opportunity to do this, it’s all for such a great cause”.
