Former Michigan Governor in Line for Secretary of Energy Post
Granholm choice gives automakers an ally in new administration.
Former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm is President-elect Joe Biden’s choice for Secretary of Energy.
President-elect Joe Biden is apparently prepared to nominate former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm to lead the U.S. Department of Energy, giving the domestic auto industry an influential ally in the new administration’s inner circles.
Granholm’s selection, which hasn’t been announced formally, was kept well below the radar. However, Biden worked with Granholm on the critical effort to rescue General Motors and Chrysler Corp. during the early days of the Obama administration in 2009 when she was in her last term as Michigan’s governor.

Dec 15 (Reuters) - President-elect Joe Biden is close to announcing a slate of Cabinet nominees who will be central to his administration s sweeping plan to fight climate change, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The picks include a diverse list of nominees to head the departments of Energy, Transportation and the Interior, as well as a new office leading domestic climate policy coordination at the White House, the sources said.
On their shoulders would be Biden s goal of moving the United States to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 – a once-unimaginable task that will require the world s second-largest emitter to overhaul major parts of its economy, from cars, trucks and planes to power plants, farms and buildings.

President-elect Joe Biden formally announced Thursday his intent to nominate former two-term Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm to serve in his Cabinet as energy secretary. As governor, her efforts to help the state s economy focused on advancing manufacturing and green energy. She pressed for a move away from oil and toward advanced vehicles and other sources of power, such as solar and wind. After leaving office in Michigan, she moved to the West Coast and taught policy at the Goldman School of Public Policy at UC Berkeley and became an adviser to the Pew Charitable Trusts’ Clean Energy Program. Biden announced Granholm s nomination among others on his team of climate advisers, including North Carolina s Michael Regan to head the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and New Mexico Rep. Deb Haaland for Secretary of the Interior.
