Julissa Muñiz, a San Ysidro High School 2009 graduate, dreamed of creating a scholarship to help students in her community who, like her, were the first in their family to go to college.

She called a couple of her former classmates to help get the word out after she came up with a plan to raise funds for what will be the first San Ysidro Rising Scholar Award destined for other San Ysidro High graduates.

It all started with a Facebook post, and in just over a week, they have raised more than $7,500.
