Guidebook publishers emerge from 2020 with new approaches to travel By Daniel Lefferts | Jul 23, 2021 Publishing involves a high degree of fortune telling: what will hook readers, in what form, and when? These questions, already daunting, are further complicated by the stubborn fact of production. NZ Herald The gloriously realised set of Single Asian Female is visible before the show begins – rows of beautiful lanterns glowing behind a luminous neon sign for the Golden Phoenix Cafe, the biggest example of the rich red that permeates the set. Then once the lights dim, the sign transforms into a karaoke machine, and we are introduced to our heroine Pearl belting out I Will Survive in broken English, drawing the audience into her story with a boisterous, bitter monologue sang to the tune of Gloria Gaynor s hit.

All about Pearl Wong, a first-generation Chinese immigrant, restaurateur and single mother, this funny, moving play is about balancing family, business and karaoke. April 27-May15, ASB Waterfront Theatre. I was a bookworm child, a voracious reader and very artsy. At school I was also academically bright, so was encouraged to study law alongside my theatre degree. The idea being that I d have law to fall back on. I only did the first year of my law degree, as it felt like a lot of work to have something to fall back on. I m lucky my parents have always been supportive and saw the theatre world as an acceptable pathway and my brother kindly became a lawyer instead.
