“These things, they’re not black and white,” laments Michelle (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell), one of the teenagers at the centre of the riotous comedy Derry Girls (Netflix). Part of the success of the show, which is set in 1990s Northern Ireland, is that she could be speaking of either the struggles of adolescence or the violent sectarian divide in her homeland. Built on traditional sitcom mishaps and high-school antics, the series is a madcap memoir from creator Lisa McGee.
