The majority of organisations are not yet compliant with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) which becomes effective on 1 July this year.

According to a survey conducted by TPN Credit Bureau on how ready companies are for POPI, only 27.4% are process ready and 40.3% are ready from a governance perspective. Technological readiness scored the highest at 57%, which is still a far cry from compliant. Of the 200 companies we surveyed, only 8% scored above 80% for their POPIA readiness.
Although organisations are expected to be fully compliant with the POPIA by 1 July with all the necessary systems and processes in place, industry bodies were required to have submitted a code of conduct to the Information Regulator by 1 March 2021 according to Regulation 5 of the POPI Act.

The South African rental market is under pressure as many good tenants step up to property ownership and a large proportion of those left behind are struggling with their finances.
This means landlords are having to step up their game when attracting, managing, and retaining tenants who are able to honour their leases and look after their properties.
Tenant payment performance is improbving in the residential tenant population but a full recovery to pre-lockdown levels is yet to be achieved, says Michelle Dickens, chief executive of TPN Credit Bureau.
Landlords strangled by Covid-19 lockdown regulations on evictions
Cape Town - Landlords are struggling at every turn.
And extended lockdown regulations that prevent them from being able to evict long-term non-paying tenants, is adding to their burden.
Now the DA is calling on the government to amend Regulation 73(2) that empowers a court to stay all eviction proceedings for the duration of the national state of disaster, which at present is an indefinite period.
Andrew Schaefer, managing director of property management group Trafalgar, says long delays in being able to action any eviction orders that were obtained has exacerbated the grave loss of rental income for many landlords over the past year.
