Democrat Ron Kim announces bid for Saratoga Springs mayor | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS Shares0 SARATOGA SPRINGS – Former city public safety commissioner Ron Kim on Wednesday announced his Democratic candidacy for mayor of Saratoga Springs on Wednesday, saying he wants to bring unity to the city in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, comparing it to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which he said first got him interested in public service. “I am running for mayor of Saratoga Springs to return us to that unity and singularity of purpose,” Kim said during at announcement in High Rock Park. “Because just like in 2001, we have gone through difficult times. We have lost good friends. We have seen suffering. We have seen injustice. As a community, we will only recover if we come together.”

SARATOGA SPRINGS All five seats on the City Council, as well as both supervisor positions, will be up for vote in November. Of those five council positions, at least four will look different, effectively creating a major overhaul of governing powers in City Hall.  To date, 11 potential candidates have filed “designated petitions” to run for the five council seats. Six candidates have similarly filed regarding the city’s two supervisor positions up for election.

Kim, who has been endorsed by the city s Democratic Committee, will make a formal announcement at 11 a.m. at the city s 9/11 Memorial at High Rock Park. On Tuesday, the attorney who served the city from 2006 to 2010, said he has several priorities if elected. His number one would be building the eastside fire and EMS station on Henning Road.

Saratoga City Council OKs police reform plan by 4-1 margin | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS SARATOGA SPRINGS  Acting just hours ahead of a state-imposed deadline, the Saratoga Springs City Council on Wednesday approved a police reform and reinvention plan one that will push the city toward establishing a civilian review board that would have authority to review complaints against police officers. The council voted 4-1 to approve a resolution drafted by City Attorney Vincent DeLeonardis that has generated public criticism because it doesn’t fully support all 50 recommendations made in early March by a citizen task force that looked at ways to reform policing in the city.
