Although the bread basket is typically an afterthought in traditional restaurant settings, disappearing during the wave of low- and no-carb dining, these days many restaurants are (re)-introducing bread programs at no or minimal charge as a means of whetting the appetites of their customers. Here are some Houston establishments offering some baller bread programs.
Steak 48
Before you tuck into that juicy ribeye, be sure to sample Steak 48âs gratis dinner rolls, which arrive plump and piping hot to your table in a cast-iron pan. They shimmer and sparkle, thanks to a generous glaze of butter and sprinkle of sea salt, respectively, and their interior is pure pillowy white dough. As is, the dinner rolls (a pedestrian term for such superior starches) are divine, but if you add a schmear of parmesan spread, they become even more decadent.

For the banh mi baguette, Lam devoted a great deal of time searching for the perfect bread while creating a tasty pate and rich garlic aioli to elevate the banh mi experience. Instead of the traditional carrot and daikon garnish, Lam and Yeung developed a more expensive and tastier adornment of house pickled carrot and papaya. Happy Farms of Texas, a one-woman operation out of Katy, provides the chefs with fresh herbs and produce for the restaurant.
The beverage choices are just as thoughtful with fresh-pressed juices, ube and pandan lattes and Vietnamese iced coffees made with New Orleans coffee of choice, Cafe du Monde. The espresso-based drinks will be made with beans from Double Barrel Coffee Roaster, a small batch operation in Missouri City.
The team behind the best restaurant bread program in Houston will open a new bakery to expand its offerings. Badolina Bakery & Cafe will open this spring

Ten Israeli startups are set to compete next week in a virtual contest as part of the Startup World Cup 2021, an annual competition created by Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm Pegasus Tech Ventures. The competition made its debut in Israel recently with Tech It Forward, a boutique consulting and tech events agency, and launched a call for applications in December.
The competition began in 2020 with over 50 local regional contests on six continents. Pandemic restrictions permitting, 10 finalists selected from among all regional winners are expected to head to San Francisco in May 2021 for the finale with a chance to win a $1 million investment prize.
