Springfield, IL high schools will have in-person graduation ceremonies

Calling it an emotional boost, School District 186 Superintendent Jennifer Gill confirmed Monday that traditional in-person class graduation is a go for the three public high schools. Lanphier, Southeast and Springfield will have separate ceremonies at the Bank of Springfield Center on June 5 along with Glenwood High School. Each student will receive four tickets because the center is still operating at 25% capacity, Gill said, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Students will have to social distance and be required to wear masks at the ceremony, Gill said. Last year, students had the option of an individual stage experience, where they could receive their diplomas and dressed in cap and gown. Those graduations were held at the schools respective football stadiums or fields.

School board candidates square off

Tiffany Mathis and Buffy Lael-Wolf Response to the pandemic and how to address equity issues were hot topics during a virtual forum for Springfield school board candidates. The Feb. 25 event was hosted by the Faith Coalition for the Common Good and League of Women Voters. Two of seven seats will be up for grabs during the April 6 election. Judith Johnson will not run to retain her seat in Subdistrict 6, and there are three candidates to fill the spot. Subdistrict 5 will have two candidates on the ballot, including an incumbent. Anthony Mares, the current board president, is running unopposed in Subdistrict 1. Michael Zimmers is also running unopposed in Subdistrict 4.

New format will break down COVID-19 cases in District 186 by school

In a sometimes contentious and spirited District 186 school board meeting Monday, some members openly questioned the transparency of the administration especially around COVID-19 data. A particular issue was a meeting two board members J. Michael Zimmers and Micah Miller had Friday with several teachers who professed concern about safety issues in their schools and a lack of details being shared with them. An email listing those concerns in part prompted a correspondence from Superintendent Jennifer Gill Sunday that gave a more exact and detailed set of COVID-19 cases per school, something Gill promised she would be furnishing publicly on the district s website.
