Opinion/Yelnosky: Chief Justice John Roberts strike zone Michael Yelnosky Michael Yelnosky is a professor at Roger Williams University School of Law and the former dean of the law school.  Chief Justice John Roberts has carefully cultivated his reputation as an “institutionalist,” a justice who puts the Supreme Court’s institutional legitimacy ahead of partisanship.  During his confirmation hearings he famously pledged to simply “call balls and strikes.” Most understood him to be declaring that judges can and should be wholly impartial, neutral decision makers.  He has repeated that message during his tenure.  He defended the federal judiciary from claims by President Trump that judges reflect the ideologies of the presidents who nominated them. “We do not have Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges,” he wrote.
