If Not Now, When? Opens at Maude Kerns Art Center

1:54 Sandy Brown Jensen talks about the exhibit at Maude Kerns Art Center in Eugene for KLCC s Viz City.   This is Sandy Brown Jensen, and you’re listening to Viz City, KLCC’s arts review program. Eugeneans know Tim Boyden as the owner of the popular Out on a Limb art gallery. It’s been closed a while now, and Tim has had some health issues, which lit a fire for “community, collaboration, and positivity.” It was Tim who asked the question, “If not not now, when?” which became the title of the season opener exhibit at the Maude Kerns Art Center.

If Not Now, When?

If Not Now, When? was chosen in part by local artist Tim Boyden, who brought together a group of artists that also includes Jud Turner, Ila Rose and Michael Whitenack (art pictured). Boyden felt he wanted to “get like-minded people together in these times, and get a sense of urgency about our world.” The exhibit’s message is about artistic collaboration and positive outlooks for the future. Through art, they wish to “Heal the divisions and bring people with different visions together, for a better future for all.” Sarah Ciampa, the exhibits coordinator at Maude Kerns, says, “I think the art is fantastic. I’m very inspired by it. It’s some of the best work by some of the best artists that Eugene has.”

If Not Now, When? asks four Eugene artists in Maude Kerns Art Center s season opener

If Not Now, When? asks four Eugene artists in Maude Kerns Art Center s season opener “She’s smiling at you, deciding whether you’re lunch or dinner,” Boyden said.  Playing with rocks one day, a regular activity for Boyden, the inorganic material came alive with the torso of a creature. Inspired, maybe a bit confused, Boyden took the body to Whitenack to decide on its head and limbs. The resulting malformation is a mutant that exudes wisdom.  “These creatures evolutionarily express how we’d like to see our relationship with Earth change,” Boyden said. “Your ego you gotta leave at the door if you’re going to change anything and get out of the box. We just gotta trust each other and go forward.”
