Rob Burton, who also serves as the mayor of Oakville, handed in his resignation Monday as chair of the Halton Police Services Board after stating on Friday he’d approved Chief Steve Tanner’s request to visit Florida for the holidays for what was described as a “property matter.”

In his resignation letter to Halton Region Chair Gary Carr and issued as a statement on Monday, Burton said he is “deeply regretful” for his response to the chief’s proposed trip.

Despite ongoing pleas from provincial and federal health officials to stay put and not travel, Halton Police Chief Stephen Tanner is in Florida for a “property matter” – a trip he says he deeply regrets.
Tanner issued a statement on Friday, acknowledging he did in fact travel to Florida at the end of December with “the knowledge and support of the Halton Police Board Chair.”
