Facebook s Housing Echo Chamber

Facebook’s Housing Echo Chamber Details PERSPECTIVE-In 2019, I reported in 48 hills that the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative was using mega-grants to shape California housing law and policy. CZI gave Enterprise Community Partners $500,000 to draft and then lobby for Assemblymember David Chiu’s AB 1487, the law that authorized the Metropolitan Transportation Commission to become a one-stop regional planning agency overseeing transportation and housing and to levy taxes on the nine-county Bay Area; CZI formally endorsed that bill.  CZI also gave the Terner Center for Housing Innovation at UC Berkeley nearly a million dollars: $440,000 for unspecified uses and $500,000 to start a Housing Lab essentially, a development incubator under the aegis of the celebrated public university.

When the California Public Utilities Commission recommended 17 months ago that a gas-fired power plant on the Redondo Beach waterfront remain open beyond 2020 over the objections of local officials and clean energy activists Commissioner Martha Guzman Aceves made a commitment to the city’s mayor. “I pledge to you, Mayor Brand, that I will never support a further extension,” she said. Now it looks like that promise will be put to the test.

THE BUZZ Two political truisms to start your day: Campaigning is easier than governing, and a reason thorny issues endure is that they rarely have easy solutions. We were thinking about both principals on Wednesday as Gov. Gavin Newsom’s would-be Republican rivals continued to lambaste him over schools

MCCARTHY S double flip-flop — CAGOP: Putting TRUMP in the rear view mirror? — Poet GORDON s rocket-like rise — AMAZON to assist with vaccines — BIDEN promises wartime COVID effort

01/22/2021 09:11 AM EST THE BUZZ THE ‘TRUMP-NESIA’ STRATEGY? The embattled California Republican Party has some heavy lifting ahead while it remains laser-focused on one big political goal: the recall of Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom. And all that may mean putting Donald Trump in the rear view mirror as quickly as possible. State GOP chair Jessica Millan Patterson for weeks has tweeted and issued statements about Newsom and his failures. But Trump’s name has never been uttered, his failings including pushing conspiracies of election fraud never addressed, and reporters’ questions on those key party issues unanswered. The party’s official line has been to decry the violent breaching of the U.S. Capitol, but to do so while omitting Trump and his role from the discussion.

Michael Smolens: Trump gets his wall, apparently with help from south of the border [The San Diego Union-Tribune :: BC-SMOLENS-COLUMN:SD]

FAIRFIELD-SUISUN, CALIFORNIA Michael Smolens: Trump gets his wall, apparently with help from south of the border [The San Diego Union-Tribune :: BC-SMOLENS-COLUMN:SD] President Donald Trump’s border wall has been built apparently with assistance from Mexicans who were smuggled into the United States illegally. That may be an ironic final note for the project that has become the symbol of Trump’s disputed, hard-line approach to immigration policy. The wall was supposed to block people from Mexico and other countries from crossing the border illegally, and keep them from taking U.S. jobs. The border barrier may be doing that, to some degree.
