Author: Otis Sanford (Local 24) Published: 2:04 PM CDT April 13, 2021 Updated: 5:30 PM CDT April 13, 2021 MEMPHIS, Tenn. Policing in America is at a tipping point. In cities such as Memphis, police are expected to do something to stop the wave of violent crime. Memphis law enforcement reacts to Tennessee constitutional carry bill

Despite significant pushback from Memphis law enforcement and other agencies across Tennessee, permitless carry, or Constitutional carry, was signed into state law Thursday. This means if you have no existing convictions that would bar you from owning a gun, and you are 21 or older, you will be able to carry a firearm openly or concealed no training or permit required.  Gov. Bill Lee signed the bill into law Thursday and thanked Tennessee lawmakers and the National Rifle Association for helping him get the task done. Eighteen other states, including Mississippi and Arizona, have enacted permitless carry. The law goes into effect on July 1. It does not apply to long guns. In addition to removing misdemeanor charges once associated with carrying a gun without a permit, the new law also introduces harsher sentencing measures for some gun crimes.

Tennessee Governor Signs Bill Allowing Permitless Carry of Handguns for Law-Abiding Residents

Tennessee Governor Signs Bill Allowing Permitless Carry of Handguns for Law-Abiding Residents Tennessee has officially joined 19 other states to allow permitless carry of handguns by law-abiding residents, meaning that law-abiding adults in the state are allowed to carry a handgun without a permit. Gov. Bill Lee on Thursday signed into law the measure that would allow residents 21 and older, or members of the military aged 18 to 20, to carry handguns openly or concealed without a permit, except in areas already restricted under existing laws. Permitless carry will also not apply to long guns, a point of contention for gun activists. “I signed constitutional carry today because it shouldn’t be hard for law-abiding Tennesseans to exercise their #2A rights. Thank you members of the General Assembly and @NRA for helping get this done,” Lee said in a statement on Thursday.
