Phoenix Police Make Arrest In Stray Bullet Killing Of Girl

Updated: Monday, June 28, 2021 - 6:19pm Phoenix police have made an arrest in the fatal shooting Friday of 15-year-old girl Graciela Molina. After two days of knocking on doors and interviewing witnesses, the department took 35-year-old Fernando Pina into custody on multiple charges, among them reckless manslaughter and endangerment, on Sunday evening.  Pina was suspected of firing his gun at a block wall separating a utility lot and the neighborhood of Molina. One of the bullets missed Pina s target and entered through Molina s second-floor bedroom window, striking her in the neck. Her room was set in between her father s and her 11-year-old sister.

Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams has tested positive for the coronavirus and is now quarantining at home. Her Executive Assistant Chief Michael Kurtenbach previously tested positive and plans to return from quarantine next week. Williams has mild symptoms and has kept working remotely, police spokesman Sgt. Andy Williams said on Friday, adding that police operations haven’t been negatively impacted. “The Phoenix Police Department is made up of the community, and we re experiencing challenges with COVID-19 just like everyone else. And we re taking the same steps that we recommend everyone else take, which is wearing a mask (and) socially distancing, Williams said. Just those same protocols that you keep hearing us push out, we are actually practicing those here as well.

Williams and Kurtenbach are experiencing mild symptoms, according to a statement released by officials. Both are working from home while they quarantine, and Executive Assistant Chief Kurtenbach will return early next week after previously testing positive, officials said. Nearly 450,000 Arizonans have tested positive for COVID-19, and now Chief Jeri Williams is one of them, the department said in a Facebook post Friday afternoon.

Arizona still expects to receive just under 42,000 doses of the vaccine made by Pfizer and BioNTech, along with nearly 120,000 doses of a vaccine from Moderna, Dr. Cara Christ, director of the Arizona Department of Health Services, said. The Moderna vaccine received emergency authorization from the federal government Friday night and will begin shipping out to states across the U.S.
