An attorney for the family of a boy who died of injuries sustained on an Adventureland Park ride last month is criticizing park officials for what he says is their refusal to cooperate with an investigation of the accident.
The park, through its attorney, countered that the family s attorney has refused to allow park officials to interview them.
Attorney Ryan Best, representing the family of Michael Jamarillo, the 11-year-old boy who died of injuries he suffered when he was trapped beneath an overturned raft on the park s Raging River Ride, said in a written statement that the Jaramillo family has made multiple requests to allow their representatives access to the Raging River. Despite representations to the media that Adventureland is working cooperatively with the Jaramillo family, to date, Adventureland has refused to provide the Jaramillos access to the boats or the ride.
More than 100 people gathered in what was for most an unfamiliar church.
Michael s father, his mother, Sabrina, and brother, Gus, have spent days and nights far from their Marion home.
Joining them were family members from Chicago, where Michael was born.
And also joining them were members of two Cedar Rapids-area church families.
Shields is the senior pastor of Christian Life Church. It was within his congregation that Michael became born again six months ago.
Bishop Robert Green leads Kingdom Encounter Church, a 47-year-old, multicultural congregation where Michael and his family also worshipped.
But on Saturday, they were all one big family celebrating the boy s life.

Lawyer Ryan Best said his account comes from conversations with numerous witnesses who reached out to him as news spread of the holiday weekend tragedy. Eleven-year-old Michael Jamarillo died after the boat flipped and his 16-year-old brother, David, was critically injured. The first people to help my clients were park guests, Best said. No one from the park responded to this incident prior to the first responders arrival.
Adventureland did not directly respond to Best s account but said that park workers actions were prompt. Prompt action was taken by the ride operator, park security, and on-site park EMS crew to respond, said spokeswoman Molly Vincent.
