A New Berlin man has pleaded not guilty to charges that he allegedly pointed a loaded gun at a state senator as both men were driving through Springfield in March.
54-year-old Michael Hoyle is free on bond as he awaits trial on felony and misdemeanor charges related to the incident. Democratic State Senator Elgie Sims of Chicago says he thinks the legislative plates on his vehicle may have led to the confrontation, but police and prosecutors have not yet offered any theory of a motive in the case. The State Journal-Register reports that Hoyle will have another hearing Friday on a request to modify the terms of his bond to allow him to travel out of state.
