It was too early to call a couple of critical runoff elections in Georgia late Tuesday, with partisan control of the U.S. Senate and President-elect Joe Biden’s legislative agenda hanging in the balance.
Democrat Raphael Warnock has won one of Georgia’s two US Senate runoffs, becoming the first black senator in his state’s history and putting the Senate majority within the Democrats’ reach.
Mr Warnock, a pastor who spent the past 15 years leading the Atlanta church where Martin Luther King Jr preached, defeated Republican incumbent Kelly Loeffler.
It was a stinging rebuke of outgoing President Donald Trump, who made one of his final trips in office to Georgia to rally his loyal base behind Ms Loeffler and the Republican running for the other seat, David Perdue.
The focus now shifts to the second race between Mr Perdue and Democrat Jon Ossoff.

Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, Democratic challengers who represented the diversity of their partyâs evolving coalition, defeated Republicans David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler two months after Biden became the first Democratic presidential candidate to carry the state since 1992.

Democrat Raphael Warnock made history early Wednesday as he defeated one of Georgia’s two Republican senators in a hard-fought runoff election, putting Joe Biden’s party one step away from gaining full control of Congress for the first part of his presidency.
Warnock, a pastor who has for the past 15 years led the Atlanta church where the late Martin Luther King, Jr., preached, was declared the winner by The Associated Press as he trounced incumbent Sen. Kelly Loeffler by more than 35,000 ballots, or nearly 1% of the vote, with more than 97% of the results tabulated.
