Can businesses be shamed into paying back the wage subsidy?

Michael Hill jewellery has declined to return the wage subsidy, despite posting profits for the year. “Naming and shaming can work but it tends to be not as effective as we think it will be,” said University of Auckland marketing lecturer Bodo Lang. The effectiveness of shaming depended on factors like whether the item was essential to the consumers and the position the company had in the local community, he said. If a company’s product could be easily bought from someone else then consumers were able to wield more power in naming and shaming a business. “This is not just something that works from a consumer to business perspective. It also works from a business to business perspective,” Lang said.
