Letters to editor for Sunday, May 9, 2021 Letter writers Courage for democracy Kudos to U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney for having the guts to stand up and be counted for her beliefs even though it may cost her the leadership position she holds in the Republican Party. Hers is the face of courage for speaking the truth about Donald Trump and his efforts to destroy our democracy. Trump did not create the insurrectionists groups in our country; these radical groups have existed in the U.S. for a long time. However, his fiery rhetoric helped fan the flames of their discontent, resulting in the storming of the Capitol on Jan. 6. These groups aim to overthrow our government; and in the weeks after the Capitol episode, it became clear there are radical members in the House and Senate.

Donalds failed test A Republican action committee (the Republican Accountability Project) recently released its grades for Republicans in Congress regarding (their actions and statements before and after) the Jan. 6 attempt to overthrow democracy. Rep., Byron Donalds (who represents part of coastal Southwest Florida) got an F. He told HuffPost.com in a statement that he does not take the “never Trumper” group seriously. He repeated Trump’s false assertion that a number of states had unconstitutionally violated election law as the reason for his actions, HuffPost stated online. “I will always receive an A rating defending the Constitution,” Donalds said, according to HuffPost.
