Members of the Illinois Electoral College on Monday called for nationwide unity and a full-speed transition to a new administration as they cast all 20 of the state’s electoral votes for Democrats Joe Biden for president and Kamala Harris for vice president amid President Donald Trump’s continuing dispute of the November election results.
Several electors said they were happy to be casting their votes for Harris, a California senator and the first African-American and first woman to be elected vice president.
The socially distanced vote, held in the Illinois House chamber during the global COVID-19 pandemic, was a formality in a state with a winner-take-all system and all-Democratic electors selected for the electoral college, as a result.
