Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple called Tuesday one of the best days of his career. It s one year after he turned part of the jail into housing for the homeless in a program called the Sheriff s Homeless Improvement Program.
Sheriff Apple says 64 people have come through this program in its first year. It s more than just a place to sleep. There s a veterans pod inside the walls, and a place for people to learn parenting skills, computer skills, and trade skills.
One year after the Sheriff s Homeless Improvement Program began, partners celebrated its success. SEFCU gave a grill, and President Michael Castellana personally donated $20,000 to help graduates with things like security deposits.
