Humboldt Pride Week to feature drag show, painted crosswalk, and more

Humboldt Pride Week is on the horizon. The week begins on Monday, May 31 and will start with a pride flag raising at Humboldt City Hall. There will be a number of other events throughout the week as well. Some of the events include a ‘Rainbow Coffee’ workshop, a diversity pride worship service, a talent night featuring local LGBTQ and ally talent. Friday’s event is also a first for Humboldt as ‘Drag Me Across Saskatchewan’ will be holding two drag shows. “We’re super excited to bring that,” said Humboldt Pride Network Founder and Chair Andrew Matheson. “We’ve been trying to do a drag show in Humboldt for a very long time.”

Work begins on 16th Street, project more expensive than expected

The city had budgeted $1.86 million for the project. Brockman Enterprises bid was the lowest one. Peter Bergquist, the city’s public works director, told council that the costs of pipe and roadworks has gone up, resulting in the increased costs. He said he had the consulting engineer for the project look at similar projects and they found the prices were in line with what they were experiencing.  “I’m very pleased that it’s a local tender that’s coming across,” said Michael Behiel, Humboldt’s mayor. “I’d like to see us remaining local whenever possible.” In a letter to residents, the city said on the week of May 11, temporary water lines will be set up for the residents along 16th Street from 8th Avenue to the southern entrance of Jubilee Drive. For the week of May 17, that section of 16th Street will be closed to traffic.

COVID can t stop data collection: The census is back

The online portal is now open to accept responses from every household. The questionnaire appears after an access code, unique to each person,  is input as instructed, said Marc Melanson, area manager for the Atlantic provinces for the census. And while the census encourages everyone to complete it by May 11, this is not a hard deadline, Melanson said. If someone does not have access to the internet or does not wish to complete the census online, it can also be completed over the phone or by calling the phone number listed inside to have a paper copy mailed to you, he said.

St Augustine school zone expanding

“Our street is not designated as a school zone even though all kids east of here use the street to go to school or the playground. Drivers on our street are always speeding from the highway to the intersection [of 10th Street and Ninth Avenue] and don’t seem to worry about kids crossing the street or coming out of the alley.” In response to the concerns brought forward by the letter, the school zone on Ninth Avenue, the zone will be expanded eastward, ending halfway between 10th Street and Main Street. On 10th Street, which currently doesn’t have a school zone, the new zone will start at where the church’s overhanging entrance roof begins and extend north to around one property north of the 10th Street-Ninth Avenue intersection.
