Legal marijuana in New York couldn’t come soon enough (Commentary)

When I turned in my reporter’s notebook at a suburban newspaper nearly half-a-century ago, colleagues gave me an ounce of marijuana, a parting gift they knew I’d appreciate, even share. Many of us had smoked pot in college; and we continued using the drug well into adulthood to relax after work.
Acquisition of pot wasn’t difficult. We had our own system of direct delivery. One reporter bought wholesale. He walked around the newsroom and handed plain manila envelopes to like-minded staffers. If we weren’t at our desks, he’d simply leave the envelope on our typewriters. Possession was illegal, but we were the privileged class. We didn’t see the hypocrisy of harvesting names of “drug felons” from crime blotters so we could write stories that sold papers.
