Where did Deep Ellum get its name? Curious Texas investigates

Deep Ellum is known for its music and art scenes and eclectic businesses. The neighborhood just east of downtown Dallas had a similar reputation during its beginnings in 1873.
A reader wanted to know more about the lively neighborhood’s start and asked Curious Texas, “Where did the name Deep Ellum come from?”
