DARKE COUNTY DEPUTIES INVESTIGATE SECOND JULY 4
Th TRAFFIC FATALITY
On July 4, 2021 at 3:54 p.m. Darke County Sheriff Deputies along with Arcanum Rescue, Laura Fire Department, Darke County Accident Reconstruction Team and Miami Valley Care Flight responded to a 2 vehicle accident at the intersection of Red River West Grove Road and Penney Road.
Preliminary investigation revealed that a Black 2008 Honda CMX250 motorcycle driven by Thomas Shatzley (85), of Pleasant Hill, was traveling south on Red River West Grove Road and attempted to turn east onto Penney Road. A Blue 2003 Honda Accord was traveling northbound on Red River West Grove Road driven by a juvenile (17), of Arcanum. Mr. Shatzley’s vehicle turned into the path of the Honda causing the vehicles to collide. Mr. Shatzley was ejected from his motorcycle.

On Tuesday, Feb. 2 at approximately 12:07 p.m, Corey Gardner, 18, of West Union, was operating a 2006 Chevrolet Impala southbound on US 62 in New Market Township, Highland County, when his vehicle allegedly struck a horse-drawn buggy operated by Scott Richardson, 56, of Hillsboro.
Mr. Richardson was flown to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton with serious injuries.
