The statewide Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Award ceremony was held on April 27 in virtual format. The Ohio Educational Service Center Association sponsors the state awards.
The Southern Ohio Educational Service Center presented awards to the top students from each county in the region consisting of Adams, Clinton, Fayette and Highland counties.
The Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Award was established in 1989 by Ohio’s County Superintendents to recognize student achievement and promote academic accomplishment. One senior from each of Ohio’s eighty-eight counties receives this prestigious honor each year. Recipients are selected by virtue of their academic achievement, personal accomplishments, and community service.

A Laurel Oaks student and several local businesses were honored last week with Exceptional Achievement Awards by the Hopewell Center in Hillsboro. Several others were also nominated by Laurel Oaks staff.
Mark Bush and Angie Howell at Bush Auto in Wilmington were recognized for an extraordinary mentorship of a student with special needs.
They offered support for his job after hours and on holidays with job coaching. They took time to talk him through challenges he was having in his life. They helped the student to purchase a care to be able to drive to work.
Jesse Stuart wrote that great teachers continue to have a positive role in the lives of their students that will last a lifetime. Like most adults, I can name a handful of great teachers in grade school, high school and college who have had a greater influence on my life than they probably ever knew.
I consider James Klass, who I had for senior English and public speaking during the 1965-66 school at Miami Trace High School near Washington Court House, Ohio, to be the best teacher I ever had before attending college at Morehead State University, where I graduated in 1970.
