WALA LANG
PLACES OF WORSHIP. An imaginary church façade drawn with details of the Philippines’ 50 must-see churches on the cover of Regalado Trota Jose, Simbahán (Manila: The Crown Book, Inc., 2020).
In Tagalog,
simbahan is a noun meaning church and
simbahán (with accent on the last syllable), an imperative verb suggesting or ordering, “go worship.” It’s an appropriate way to begin 2021, to pray for deliverance from our present miseries.
The new book
Regalado “Ricky” José and illustrated by
Allan Jay Quesada is a selection of 50 of our “culturally or esthetically … must-visit” Catholic churches from Batanes down to Mati in Davao Oriental. It’s a great introduction to Filipino culture and tangible heritage and perfect as well for the hopeful and the repentant nothing wrong with praying while looking.

ILOILO CITY The Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) is on high alert as the New People’s Army (NPA), the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), is set to celebrate its 52nd founding anniversary on December 26.
“We have declared full alert status. We are on defensive status,” said IPPO Director Col. Gilbert Gorero.
“There should be enough cops manning all police stations,” Gorero told the Manila Bulletin.
Gorero said it is imperative that policemen in the 42 towns and component city of Passi should not let their guards down, following the NPA attack last week in Tubungan town. While the detonation of an explosive device did not harm any of the five cops onboard a police vehicle, it shattered a window.

This was stressed by Deputy Speaker and Antique Lone District Rep. Loren Legarda during the turnover today of the cotton processing center in the municipality of Patnongon in her home province.
“Support has to be sustained at the grassroots. From production up to supply, we have to make sure that the needs of our local weaving communities are met,” Legarda said in a statement.
She said the government should exhaust all means to ensure stable income for the textile communities, especially during this time of pandemic.
Through Legarda’s initiative, the setting up of the cotton processing center was funded under the 2018 General Appropriations Act (GAA) under the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFiDA).
