Women’s Lacrosse Bows Out in Quarterfinals
Ottawa, Kan.– The women’s lacrosse tournament for the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference had quarterfinal action going on Saturday. William Penn tried to take down Ottawa but the team struggled to find goals, especially in the second half. The Braves made the Statesmen pay for every mistake and the home side motored to a 15-3 victory. WPU falls to 6-8 overall as the loss will conclude the team’s season.
The Braves controlled the game after the opening draw, as they got the first couple of shots away. The home side hounded the navy and gold defenders as they tried to bring the ball up the field, giving them few passing lanes to work with. With a couple of turnovers, the Statesmen never got a clear and that resulted in the opening goal for Ottawa coming just two and a half minutes into the game. Statesmen Breeze Past Saint Mary
Oskaloosa. With a short day between games, William Penn women’s lacrosse hosted the Spires of Saint Mary (Kan.) on Saturday. With scoring coming from up and down the line up, the Statesmen cleared USM 16-5. The win gets the record for WPU up to 4-6 overall and 3-4 in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.
The navy and gold quickly produced the first shot, as MacKenzie Petersen (Fr., Albertville, Minn., Public Accounting) peppered one wide of the net within the first minute. With the Spires unable to make a clear, both Emma Lady (Sr., Richmond, Ind., Masters of Sports Management) and Hallie Clark (Fr., Centerville, Utah) got to unload shots, but neither could hit the frame. The Spires finally got a shot away and got a free position opportunity right after, but Madison Reed (Fr., Shakopee, Minn., Secondary Education) stepped up to make the save, as she would pitch 17 minutes of shutout action in the first half.
Lady Leads Statesmen to Win Over Wartburg to Open 2021 Season
Waverly, Iowa The second season of William Penn women’s lacrosse got underway with a contest against Wartburg Saturday. The Statesmen found the net early and often in the first half and continued to score in the second, doubling up the Knights 18-9. William Penn starts the campaign with a 1-0 record heading into its first-ever home game next Wednesday.
It took just 92 seconds for the Statesmen to score as Mia Arnone (Fr., St. Louis, Mo., Digital Communication) struck first to open her account on the year. Just 21 seconds later, Hallie Clark (Fr., Centerville, Utah) fired one home to put the navy and gold up 2-0.
